New EngD position: MBSE definition for time and frequency signal distribution

We have a new, fully funded, full-time EngD position. UK student only

Application deadline: 30 April 2025

Starting data: Octorber 2025

Entry requirement: 2:1+

Description:

Modern technology is dependent on effective distribution of time and frequency signals, with different end users requiring different levels of accuracy and reliability. The technologies used to distribute the signals may be subject to vulnerabilities associated with systems faults and malicious interference, but provision of security – for instance – may compromise the systems in terms of latency. Furthermore, some applications are demanding ever increasing levels of accuracy. The development of new approaches and systems to address these challenges requires consideration and modelling of increasingly complex systems. Model-Based Systems Engineering provides an approach for coping with complexity and enables a left-shift in terms of development by enabling digital prototyping to reduce cost and time of systems development and qualification. However, whilst this provides a plausible approach to improved development, it is dependent upon the competence of the models used and the extent to which they are an accurate representation of reality.

NPL maintains and develops the UK’s National Time Scale and are developing resilient Time Sale facilities to underpin critical national infrastructure. This project will seek to develop the architectures and associated models for time and frequency signal distribution to enable more rapid development and qualification of distribution systems. The integration of disparate models will constitute the novelty of this EngD research, which expected to demonstrate a generalised approach applied to a variety of different distribution system types.

Candidates must hold UK nationality. Appointment will be subject to approval at the relevant security clearance level.

The Engineering Doctorate Researcher will follow the EngD in Model-Based Systems Engineering Programme. They will be based at NPL.
